The Impact of Complexity on Project Value Delivery
Presented by: Martin J. Brown, Jr.

Abstract: No project is initiated if it doesn't provide value. We define the project value during initiation then usually treat this concept of value as a constant through the life of the project. Perceived stakeholder value evolves over the life of the project in response to internal and external factors. This is especially true when complexity is part of the project equation. In complex environments, all decisions made by the project team have an impact on the team's ability to achieve defined objectives and deliver stakeholder value.

This presentation outlines an alternative, holistic project management approach that focuses on maximizing value and recognizes that the plan will rarely survive contact with the real world. In this environment planning is more dynamic. The project manager and the project team have a shared situational awareness, based on "what if" analysis of internal and external factors that could impact execution. Communication is constant and authority to respond is delegated to the individual team member.

Martin J. Brown Jr. has over 25 years of experience in managing complex projects ranging from advanced technology research and development efforts to establishing a new Air Force organization. Following his Air Force career, Marty became the "go to" guy for rescuing troubled projects at SRA. Drawing on a value based project management approach and a keen understanding of project related uncertainty he consistently delivered high priority results turning potential disaster into success. Marty has managed numerous projects for the government and private sector amassing a record of delivering required capabilities on time and within budget in part due to the effective application of value principles. He has spoken to various industry and government groups on recommendations to improve the art and science of project management including the Defense Acquisition Research Symposium where he spoke about Adaptive Project Management.

Mr. Brown holds both Project Management Professional and Agile Certified Practitioner certification from the Project Management Institute. He is currently focused on developing his concepts of adaptive project management into a book. He also provides project managers with the knowledge needed for consistent success through Project Success Strategies.
