ABSTRACT: 

At UC San Diego Extension, we understand that professionals have a number of reasons for studying, so we have designed course offerings to meet as many of your needs as possible. The courses listed below may be taken individually or as part of Extension’s Professional Certificate in Project Management. Extension’s Project Management program courses provide a practical, hands-on approach to understanding the industry. Traditional in-class, online, and intensive courses are offered throughout the year to meet the needs of our diverse students. If you are interested in completing the full certificate, there are five required courses plus approximately two elective courses. We invite you to join our community of learning professionals.

Grow Your Project Management Knowledge and Skills

Effective project management skills are important to professionals in any industry. Learn how to define, plan and execute a project whether your goal is simple or complex. Gain the tools and knowledge for delivering projects on time and on budget, while meeting performance specifications. Explore the basic components of project management and the project life cycle: determining the correct project through strategic portfolio analysis; creating a successful charter; assembling and managing a team; analyzing and controlling risk; monitoring project milestones; and closing out the project. Get the hands-on skills you need to help you successfully complete your next project management assignment.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand project, program, and portfolio management and their importance to enterprise success
  • Describe the various approaches for selecting projects, programs, and portfolios
  • Explain the main tasks involved in and outputs of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing projects
  • Demonstrate knowledge of project management terms and techniques
  • Apply project management concepts by working on a team project as project manager or active team member
  • Understand PMBOK Process Groups, Knowledge Areas, Processes, and Outputs
  • Demonstrate good oral presentation skills
  • Appreciate the importance of good project management by sharing lessons learned and using knowledge and skills developed in this class in other settings

                 

 

    

Instructor - Pamela Baker, MBA, PMP, CSSBB: Pamela Baker has extensive experience as a leader in Fortune 500 companies including AON (formerly Hewitt Associates), Dell, Motorola and Thermo Fisher (formerly Life Technologies), and she is now a consultant to large organizations. She has held titles including director of program management, program manager and project manager/operational excellence manager, and she has worked in a broad range of industries. As part of Dell’s Professional Services Division (management consulting), she managed projects for external Fortune 500 clients. She began her career at Motorola, where she held numerous positions during her twelve-year tenure. At Motorola, she delivered major customer implementations onsite in the US, Brazil, China, Spain and Korea, where she managed teams in-person and virtually.

Ms. Baker is a skilled practitioner of both project management and Lean Six Sigma methodologies, and she has earned her PMP and the ASQ’s Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certifications. She has demonstrated success delivering $50 million projects and business process improvement initiatives with $5 million in cost savings.

Ms. Baker is an active member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) in both the San Diego and Orange County chapters. In service to the PMI San Diego chapter, she was recently elected as vice president of communications, where she will oversee communications to over 1800 members and sponsors in the San Diego region. She was previously a member of the PMI Chicagoland chapter for 12 years, where she served on a number of committees. She is an active speaker on project management, Lean Six Sigma and operational excellence, as well as a mentor and career coach to the next generation of project managers.

Ms. Baker earned an MBA from DePaul University, with a major in international business and a bachelor's from Northwestern University in computer science engineering. She has maintained Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) since 2002, along with Six Sigma Black Belt Certification from the American Society of Quality since 2010.

 

Education/Professional Development Units (PDU): 27 educational hours / PDUs

Drop Deadline: You can drop most courses at any time before the final class meeting (by 11:59 p.m. on the day before the scheduled end date for online courses) or before final grades are posted, whichever comes first.

Refund Deadline: 7/23/2020 - If you drop a course after the refund deadline, even if you enrolled after that date, you will not receive a refund.
