At UC San Diego Extension, we understand that professionals have a number of reasons for studying, so we have designed course offerings to meet as many of your needs as possible. The courses listed below may be taken individually or as part of Extension’s Professional Certificate in Project Management. Extension’s Project Management program courses provide a practical, hands-on approach to understanding the industry. Traditional in-class, online, and intensive courses are offered throughout the year to meet the needs of our diverse students. If you are interested in completing the full certificate, there are five required courses plus approximately two elective courses. We invite you to join our community of learning professionals.

Get the Project management skills you need in four days

This intensive course will examine the basics of putting together a well-defined, planned, and executed project. Students will learn how to define, plan and execute a project whether the goal is simple or complex; gain the tools and knowledge for delivering projects on time and on budget, while meeting performance specifications; explore the basic components of project management and the project life cycle. This course will also help students determine the correct project through strategic portfolio analysis; create a successful charter; assemble and manage a team; analyze and control risk; monitor project milestones; and close out the project.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define the characteristics of a project and be able to contrast it with a business process
  • Understand the challenges of balancing project constraints (i.e., time, cost, scope, quality, and risk)
  • Distinguish the differences between projects, programs, and portfolios
  • Recognize and describe the PMBOK® project management five process groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing) and ten knowledge areas
  • Articulate the roles and skill sets of the effective project manager practitioner
  • Specify the ethical responsibilities of the professional project manager
  • Identify those organizations, including the Project Management Institute (PMI), that offer certification programs for project managers and the process for obtaining such certifications
  • Develop awareness of factors that impact projects, including leadership, the organization, team dynamics, and power
  • Work with basic project management documents, such as the project charter, the work breakdown structure (WBS), the project management plan, and the lessons learned report



Instructor - Dragos Craciun, MS, PMPDragos Craciun is a certified scrum master with over 17 years of international experience coordinating medium to large-scale projects from initiation through delivery, including scope definition, project objectives, cost/benefit analysis, business case, planning, implementing and closure. Craciun's specialty is in designing, implementing, testing and delivering Smart Card Payment Solutions (EMV) for the banking and financial industry. He contributed to the creation of the PM “Toolbox” for GE Capital. Craciun receied a master's in computer science and is currently a senior project manager at Bofl Federal Bank.   


Education/Professional Development Units (PDU): 35 educational hours / PDUs

Drop Deadline: You can drop most courses at any time before the final class meeting (by 11:59 p.m. on the day before the scheduled end date for online courses) or before final grades are posted, whichever comes first.

Refund Deadline: 7/31/2020 - If you drop a course after the refund deadline, even if you enrolled after that date, you will not receive a refund.
