 Experiences Managing Large Water Supply Programs
Presented by: Bruce Chalmers, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California

Abstract: Mr. Chalmers has been a civil engineer for over 40 years, working primarily in the water supply industry. Mr. Chalmers will share his experiences as a Project manager at a private engineering consulting firm (CDM Smith) as well as at a large public agency (Metropolitan Water District of Southern California) He will highlight his project management philosophy and lessons learned his time as a Project Manager of both large and small water, wastewater and reuse projects. Highlights of managing large public works projects will be provided, including Orange County Water District’s Ground Water Replenishment System and MWD’s Regional Recycled Water Program. Lessons Learned will give some insight into what Mr. Chalmers considers are the most important things to remember and implement as a manager.

R. Bruce Chalmers has 40 years of design and managerial experience in the fields of water and wastewater engineering. He has been involved in projects encompassing the planning, design, and construction management of water storage and distribution facilities, sewage collection systems, sewage lift stations, water booster stations, chemical systems, and water and wastewater treatment plants. Mr. Chalmers is currently the Program Manager for the Metropolitan Water District’s Regional Recycled Water Program, a $2.6B program to provide purified water to Southern California. Mr. Chalmers has other large project experience managing multiple firm project teams, including the 70-million-gallons per-day (mgd) Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) for the Orange County Water District, one of the largest Indirect Potable Water recycled water projects operating in the world. Mr. Chalmers has a BS in engineering from UCLA and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Cal State Long Beach. He is a professional civil engineer in California, Florida and Nevada.
