Abstract: As business leaders, project managers are not only expected to plan, execute and deliver on essential projects, they are also expected to deliver innovative solutions. This may mean generating ideas in the face of risk, or it may require fully developing strategies to address problems that are not well understood.

What does this have to do with Design Thinking? At its core, Design Thinking is a process for creatively solving problems guided by a human-centered ideology. While the term was coined in the ‘90s, and the foundational ideas appeared much earlier. It has more recently become familiar as a management concept across industries and disciplines. Its use, as part of a broader commitment to design, is now increasingly recognized as a key to driving business value.

In this presentation, we will talk about the benefits of Design Thinking, discuss some of the potential challenges to adopting the process, and how these challenges can be overcome. We will also review some of the most used Design Thinking methods, as well as tools and resources for their application.

Susan Hupka is currently a Creative Project Manager for Upwork specializing in projects and questions related to Design Operations teams and processes. She previously worked at Qualcomm as a user interface designer of technical desktop software, web-based tools for data research and data visualization, and mobile apps aimed at demonstrating cutting-edge feature innovations.
